Nebiat and new friend Kwai from China visiting the local art gallery. 2008 For her three Canadian grandchildren, Nebiat hopes for them to continue to enjoy and take advantage of the life and opportunities that Canada generously offers them. Nebiat hopes that her grandchildren will go to school and complete their education and grow to be happy. Nebiat is proud, in a quiet way, that her daughter Selam is currently working towards completing her nursing degree at a nearby college. Nebiat is content to be a mother and grandmother and to provide love and support to Selam and her family as they continue their journey as Canadians.

When asked about her own future in Canada and what she would like to see for herself, Nebiat responds that one day she would like to be able return to Ethiopia and Eritrea to see once again her childhood friends and family members who live there. She has not seen members of her family since coming to Canada in 2001. Her dream is to become a Canadian citizen and get her Canadian passport. With passport in hand, she can then travel to Eritrea and Ethiopia with a greater sense of safety and security. Nebiat understands it will be some time yet before she can see her family again in Africa.

When asked about what her final wish would be, Nebiat responds that she would like to spend her final days, whenever that may be, near friends and family and to have a final resting place in her homeland of Eritrea- where her journey all began.
