Family
Pat has been married twice since her arrival on Canada. She does not have children of her own which has been freeing in some respects. She has discovered that life in Canada provides her with freedom from the constraints and expectations often found in a Malay family and traditions.
However, with the freedom, there is also a degree of isolation and loneliness. Pat finds that, now that she is older, she cherishes the relationships with her brothers and sisters. She misses not having her family geographically close to her. She also misses Malay hawker food- the true taste of home and her culture.
With no children of her own, Pat’s 2nd husband Robert’s children and grandchildren have become her adopted family here in Canada. They spend the holidays together and visit each other often. Pat also has a friendly and furry four legged friend, Teddy, a loyal and perky canine who keeps her company during walks, in the garden and at home.
