Journey to Canada
In 1992 Roshan’s youngest son, Zareershaw followed up on his father’s dream and applied to immigrate to Canada. Along with his wife and three young children, Zarirshaw was accepted as an immigrant by Canada and soon packed up the family and moved to Toronto, Ontario. Roshan’s eldest son, Nadirshaw, was now employed with an airline company and continued to live in Sri Lanka. Mindful of her husband’s dream of one day being able to immigrate to Canada, the sons promised their father they would do all they could to bring him and Roshan to Canada. Sadly, in 1996, Bomanshaw passed away peacefully at the age of 85. Within days of Bomanshaw’s death Roshan learned that she had been accepted by Canada as an immigrant. Sad that her husband did not live to see his dream of immigrating to Canada, Roshan was nevertheless determined to pursue his dream of beginning a new life in the country of Canada. And so within a few months, at the age of 72, Roshan boarded a plane that took her from Mumbai to Toronto where she would begin a new life chapter as a senior immigrant in Canada.
Roshan was met at Pearson Airport by her son and his family. Pleased to be reunited with her son, Roshan found it surprisingly easy to adapt to the Canadian culture and lifestyle. In some respects it was not too different from the British culture she grew up with in India with the same language and customs. The cold Toronto winters, however, with the many weeks of unending ice and snow were another matter.
At times it became very difficult for Roshan, who was used to the warm and humid temperatures of India and Sri Lanka, to travel about. One wintry December morning, while out for a walk, Roshan slipped and broke her hip on an icy walkway. Her broken hip took nearly 4 months to heal. Because of her frail physical condition, Roshan’s doctor advised to move to a warmer place in Canada. He suggested she move to the west coast city of Victoria, British Columbia.
After discussing her doctor’s advice with her son and his family, they all decided it would be best to relocate to Victoria. In April of 1999, Roshan and her younger son Zareershaw and his family all moved to Victoria.
